Bryn Mawr

Bryn Mawr

Bryn Mawr is characterized by its long-time stability and small town charm. Over the years, it has retained much of its originality and strong gardening tradition. Known as the northwestern gateway to the Chain of Lakes, this oddly-shaped district is considered a “park within a park,” as it is surrounded by over 650 acres of green space, lakes and trails.

Bryn Mawr Neighborhood Boundaries

Bryn Mawr is a quaint neighborhood located directly west of downtown Minneapolis. It is pocketed by Theodore Wirth Park to the north and west, Bassett Creek to the north, Bryn Mawr Meadows to the east, and Cedar Lake Park to the south. A small yet active business district at the intersection of Cedar Lake Road and Penn Avenue South offers residents shops, restaurants and more.

Bryn Mawr Neighborhood History

Named after a local elementary school and community park, Bryn Mawr means “big hill” in Welsh. In the mid-1800s, the community was first developed as farmland. Years later, it was dubbed a “garden suburb” and “amenity zone,” given the abundance of green space and its proximity to the lakes. Housing in this area reflects several architectural styles, including Victorian, Tudor, colonial, bungalow, rambler and contemporary.

Bryn Mawr Neighborhood Landmarks

The nation’s oldest public wildflower garden is located in Bryn Mawr. The Eloise Butler Wildflower Garden and Bird Sanctuary first opened its doors on April 27, 1907. It spans across 15 acres, including the garden’s original three acres of natural bog, meadow and hillside. With over 500 plant species and 130 bird species, visitors can enjoy seasonal displays of native wildflowers and wildlife in the garden’s woodland, wetland and prairie areas.

Bryn Mawr Neighborhood Activities

While the neighborhood is primarily residential, it also offers plenty of recreational entertainment. Golf lovers can tee off at the Theodore Wirth Golf Course. Outdoor enthusiasts can walk, run, skate and bike along many miles of park trails. And residents looking to grab a bite to eat with friends are within walking-distance of the Bryn Mawr business district, which offers a few cafes and restaurants.
