CARAG – Uptown, a neighborhood named after the acronym for the neighborhood organization Calhoun Area Residents’ Action Group, is another neighborhood located in the Calhoun –Isles – Uptown community. Its boundaries are Lake Street and W. 36th Street to the north and south and Hennepin Avenue and Lyndale Avenue to the west and east. CARAG is located close to both downtown the Minneapolis Chain of Lakes, so it offers a natural setting as well as entertainment.
CARAG is another environmentally conscious neighborhood equipped with its own “Green Team” to encourage recycling, sustainability and energy saving. Bryant Square Park is located IN CARAG and is a big draw for families (the park has basketball courts, a baseball diamond and a playground) as is Lake Calhoun, which is within walking distance of most everything in CARAG. Crème Café, El Meson, Stella’s Fish Café & Prestige Oyster Bar and the award-winning Chino Latino restaurant are just a few of the establishments in CARAG. The Uptown Neighborhood News is a community newspaper that provides coverage for anything happening in the Uptown District.
Many of the homes in CARAG were built before 1920. The neighborhood includes a mix of single family homes, small and large apartment buildings filled with families as well as young professionals.
