East Isles
East Isles
East Isles is a flourishing and prosperous district rich with history. Part of the larger community of Calhoun-Isles, it’s comprised of tree-lined streets, large single-family homes, and plenty of restaurants, shops and parks. Given its hip urban vibe, it’s no surprise that most residents are young families and working professionals.
East Isles Neighborhood Boundaries
East Isles is located on the eastern side of the picturesque Lake of the Isles, part of the greater Chain of Lakes. The neighborhood extends from West 22nd Street in the north to West Lake Street to the south, with Hennepin Avenue to the east, Knox Avenue bordering to the southwest, and the lake shores to the west. All along the community’s eastern border are myriad shops, restaurants and retailers, such as Roat Osha, The Soho Café, and the well-known Uptown Diner.
East Isles Neighborhood History
As its name implies, the community was named after its location on the Lake of the Isles, which was engineered early in the 20th Century. Once a shallow lake and marsh, it was dredged to create a much larger lake that houses several small islands. The removed materials were used to transform the shoreline into the scenic green spaces and recreational state park that Minneapolitans enjoy today.
East Isles Neighborhood Landmarks
Built in 1913, the Purcell-Cutts home is a reflection of the Prairie-style design that’s synonymous with the Midwest. The home was originally constructed for architect William Gray Purcell and his family, who referred to it as Lake Place. It was later renamed after its first and second owners. Recognizing its architectural significance, the Cutts family bequeathed the home to the Minneapolis Institute of the Arts, which restored the estate and opened it to the public in 1990.
Once an active railroad line, The Midtown Greenway is a converted into a 5.5 mile long trail that winds through the city. Owned by the Hennepin County Regional Railroad Authority, it’s a popular corridor through the city for cyclists and walkers alike. The trail connects with other paths around the city, from the Chain of Lakes to the Mississippi River.
