East Calhoun is an environmentally-conscious neighborhood that is more commonly known as ECCO, which is the name of its neighborhood association (East Calhoun Community Organization).
Property managers oversee several housing types in ECCO. The housing mix includes apartment buildings, duplexes and single-family homes that were mostly built around the turn of the 20th century.
Ecco Neighborhood Boundaries
ECCO is part of both the Calhoun–Isles and Uptown communities. The neighborhood is roughly bordered by Lake Street on the north, 36th Street on the south, Lake Calhoun on the west and Hennepin Avenue to the east.
Ecco Neighborhood History
ECCO has made a huge impact on the city of Minneapolis by initiating several environmental and eco-friendly movements. It was one of the first neighborhoods in Minneapolis to adopt organic waste recycling and to start programs such as “Waste Watchers,” which is a recycling and organics program designed to raise awareness about waste reduction.
Ecco Neighborhood Landmarks
ECCO offers several places of interest for residents, such as the shores of Lake Calhoun, which was connected to the Chain of Lakes in 1911 by man-made canal. The community is also home to the Minnesota Zen Meditation Center and St. Mary’s Greek Orthodox Church. Also nearby is the Minneapolis Streetcar Museum’s North Platform.
Ecco Neighborhood Activities
Situated on the popular Lake Calhoun, recreation abounds in ECCO. It is a top destination for summer recreation, and residents can spend the long days swimming, kayaking, or paddle boarding in the lake, then head indoors for an evening of knocking down pins at Bryant Lake Bowl.
Calhoun Square is an indoor shopping mall that features popular retailers like H&M, Timberland and CB2. The mall is also home to several restaurants, like Famous Dave’s, Uptown Cafeteria, Chang Mai Tai and Republic. Nearby eateries include Amazing Thailand and Lucia’s Restaurant and Wine Bar.
