The Mill District is a historically-rich neighborhood set along the riverfront in Minneapolis. Many families and singles alike rent here and enjoy its many benefits, including quick access to several noteworthy cultural institutions and museums.
Mill District Neighborhood Boundaries
The Mill District is a relatively small neighborhood situated along the Mississippi River to the north. It’s sectioned off by the I-35W Mississippi River Bridge to the east, Washington Avenue to the south, and 5th Avenue to the west.
Mill District Neighborhood History
In the early 1900s, several flour mills – including General Mills and Pillsbury – populated the area along Saint Anthony Falls, giving what’s now known as the Mill District it’s name. Published in June 1998 and revised several years later, the Historic Mills District Master Plan included an urban design plan and guidelines for each block of the neighborhood to help redevelop the area. Many of these mills have since been restored and converted into lofts and condos.
Mill District Neighborhood Landmarks
At the center of the Mill District is the Mill City Museum, a National Historic Landmark formerly known as the Washburn A Mill. It was almost entirely destroyed by a massive fire in 1991. To save what remained, the Minnesota Historical Society opted to build a museum and education center on the foundation, which now attracts visitors from all over the country.
Mill District Neighborhood Activities
The Mill District offers several dining and cultural entertainment options. The highly respected Guthrie Theater (and attached Sea Change restaurant) is applauded by locals and visitors alike. The Milwaukee Road Depot contains an ice rink in the old train shed for winter fun. Mill Ruins Park and Gold Medal Park afford beautiful views of the Mississippi River, Stone Arch Bridge and Hennepin Island. Other establishments include Spoonriver, which serves food grown by local farmers, Sarpino’s Pizzeria, and the Mill City Farmers Market, a seasonal organic farmer’s market.
